Right. Specifically, Chapter 7 bankruptcy stays on your credit report for 10 years and Chapter 13 bankruptcy for 7 years. Both stay on your public/legal records for 20. So in the end filing bankruptcy is not the best way to get out of debt, but unfortunately for some it is their only option.
