It's not that people want to give up, some people have no options open to them. It's might be hard to understand if you aren't in the situation.
I had a collection agency asking for me to pay back some money but they wanted it all at one time. I tried calling them and they insisted that I pay it all back at once. I couldn't so I ignored their letters.
