If you are scaing for something that you really want, then the actually saving part should not be that hard.
We have an old plastic 8 litre water bottle that is half full with change. We generally bank it at the begining of December, to help pay for gifts for christmas, and we also use that money to pay for my little girls school theatre trips etc.
