I think, where possible, it is best that the young person take on student loans themselves.  Yes, they will have to pay back debt, but hopefully, they will take their education and their future career more seriously if they know they are the ones paying for it.  If a parent can help out without risking their own stability and retirement, then that is fine too.

I agree with Jean. If need to take a student loan, the children should take on their own. But if the parent afford to pay the education fees, this will be the best. No choice for the family who are not very wealthy to take debt for education. Same goes to me, also suffer on this student debt. Since we've face this experience, we should have a saving for education for our children later after they're born. This is for their bright future. No debt like us now.

I too faced simillar kinds of problem when my higher secondary was been completed. My parents believed that, thats is not my right age for me to be accompanied by debt, but myself consoled them and finally they allowed me to take my engineering course. Everyone as this basic extinct, while taking up the debt for their studies and surely nowadays bank are providing enough time and consideration.

I took out student loans and my parents paid them.  If I got good grades- that was the deal.  The first time around. When I went back to college as an adult- I paid them.  My workplace paid part and I qualified for some aid- but I took out loans for the rest. I think it's easier for the student to take out loans- but the parents should help paying them.

I am responsible for my student loans incurred while attending college.  I still have debt lingering from those loans.  My children will be responsible for any higher educational loans they wish to receive.  My focus is repaying my loans and start a savings for my retirement.  Motto:  I had to pay for my education, my kids will have to pay for theirs.
