I just want to say that even if a debt solution company is BBB accredited and has an A+ rating doesn't guarantee success. It's very important for the company, the program, and the consumers situation to match for it to work. Meaning that the consumer still has to do his homework and call the company, have his situation assessed, call other companies and compare offers.

Debt solutions - credit counseling - what the BBB recommends - -Before you select a credit counseling agency ask for information on the following: ::: -Are the agency services confidential? ::: -Will they devise a plan tailored to fit your needs? ::: -Are the counselors certified? ::: -Are budget and credit education opportunities offered? ::: -Will your funds be protected? How? ::: -Is the agency accredited? ::: -Aside from BBB membership (www.bbb.org) the consumer should also check its affiliation with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling http://www.nfcc.org.

Just adding to what Revived Paths' said about debt solutions companies, and this time about debt settlement in particular - here's a guideline as to what to look for in a settlement company so the consumer can choose for himself - -The settlement company's program must have a fast completion time. 12-36 months. -The program must be able to protect and improve the consumer's credit standing. -Must be a member of the Better Business Bureau, BBB, for at least 5 years. -Must also have a good standing with the Chamber of Commerce -A Member of TASC - The Association Of Settlement Companies and the IAPDA or the International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators

Speaking of debt settlement companies, here's where you can find the legitimate ones,
http://www.tascsite.org/index.cfm?event=Members, but if you don't have time to call them one by one, you can also just fill out a form here at destroydebt.com and get matched up to the right company for you, free or charge;
