Must be a member of the Better Business Bureau, BBB, for at least 5 years. Right but just like to clarify that the BBB has given some of the most able debt settlement companies a bad rating, even if they don't have a bad record (complaints-wise), and have revoked memberships for perhaps, public relations purposes, because the debt settlement industry has been on the hot seat as of late, because of some BAD companies. Here's how the BBB rates a debt settlement (basis): -accreditation with the BBB -how long the industry has been in operation -how long the debt settlement company's been in operation -if the government has taken an action against the company -number of complaints filed against the company, and whether it was resolved or not -if there's any advertising issues against the company -if the company has supplied the BBB with a clear and sufficient profile of their operation

If you're looking for a debt settlement company, you can choose from the TASC members directory page -
http://www.tascsite.org/index.cfm?event=Members and call them one by one. If you don't want to do a professional debt settlement, you also have the option of doing a d.i.y. debt settlement. You can browse through destroydebt.com for articles and read the threads as well.
