Just to add to this Alabama debt consolidation thread - I thought it'srelevant to state Alabama's Statute of Limitations on debt collection:Open accounts: 3 years/Contracts under seal: 10 years/Contracts not under seal; actions on account stated and for detention of personal property or conversion: 6 years/ *once the SoL on a debt is up (expired)the consumer can use it as a defense against any legal action that the collectionagency may bring up against him-her

If you are talking about debt consolidation - credit counseling - Debt Management Plan - - whether you are in Alabama or not - here's a guide for you on how to choosethe right credit counseling agency - -Before you select a credit counseling agency ask for information on the following:-Are the agency services confidential?-Will they devise a plan tailored to fit your needs?-Are the counselors certified?-Are budget and credit education opportunities offered?-Will your funds be protected? How?-Is the agency accredited?-Aside from BBB membership (www.bbb.org) the consumer should also check its affiliation with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling  http://www.nfcc.org.

Debt settlement can also be considered a debt consolidation service. Butinstead of negotiating the interest rates - it would negotiate the balance itself -granted that the amount of debt is high - $10,000 and above - and the accountsare mostly past due.
