Official Summary (via - http://www.opencongress.org/bill/111-h3421/show) 7/30/2009--Introduced.Medical Debt Relief Act of 2009 - Amends the Fair Credit Reporting Act to prohibit a consumer reporting agency from making any report containing information related to a fully paid or settled medical debt that had been characterized as debt in collection for credit reporting purposes, which, from the date of payment or settlement, antedates the report by more than 30 calendar days.

Unpaid medical debts are considered just like any other collection account that even if you've paid them off, they stay on the credit report for seven years.
