what help can the government give with personal debt consolidation?Actually there's none (specifically). However there are debt relief programsavailable for you depending on your debt type & amount owed.

Other than bankruptcy, I also do not know of the existence of a government debt consolidationprogram that could help with individual consumer's debt problem.

There are, however, professional debt consolidation programs out there that couldhelp with you reduce or get rid of your debt. It's a matter of your debt type (securedor unsecured, amount, and account status)

I agree, you don't really need the help of the government for debt consolidation -if you owe $10,000 and below, your accounts are still current but you arehaving a tough time with the interest rates - you can try Debt Management Planrun by credit counseling agencies. It will cost you $25/mo for 3-5 years.

Speaking of debt consolidation - if you're debt amount is $10,000 and more - you canopt for debt settlement. Debt settlement, instead of negotiating your interest rates, willnegotiate your balance instead. Through the program (which runs for 12- 36 months) you canbe debt free and have a brand new start. It'll cost you 15% of your total debt amount (spreadover 18 months)or 20-25% of the debt amount.
