Getting debt under control in a society such as ours seems impossible ... is it really?

Getting debt under control is not impossible, it's just tough, very tough especially if it has become your life. But I think just like alcohol and drug addiction, excessive charging or spending can also be cured.

I agree with what you guys have said - but for those who are struggling with their spending, here are some tips on getting debt under control:-classify your debts into secured and unsecured-prioritize the secured debt (if it's attached to a property especially)-consider professional debt relief/negotiation for your unsecured debt-don't take out anymore loans or additional debt-find another source of income-live within a tight budget-set your priorities straight: number one priority when it comes to your finances is elimination of that pesky debt-savings comes next

I think, for a single person especially, it is very possible to get debt under control - by having just 1 credit card - and then just deal with cash or debit cards. It's the consumers with families that are actually having a hard time with debts.

Question: Is getting debt under control just a personal issue or a national issue?

Ah but you just know how to bait me my friend - of course it's a national issue. I think this whole capitalism/consumerism system has to be reviewed. Can you imagine what the next generation is going to be like? If you ask me, the root of these debt problems, is too much freedom!

You two have to calm down ... and accept progress and just roll with it.In my opinion, getting debt under control, is more of a prologue to a solution more than a statement of a problem.
