What would happen to my credit card debt if I leave the country? Like for example, I leave and not come back ... would the creditors go after my family? Or would they follow me overseas? And bring me back home? Is that possible?

Credit card debt and leaving the country -I think the same principle applies to most situation when it comes to credit card debt liability - if somebody else co-signs the card, then the creditor would run after that person once you, the primary account holder, somehow disappears. No they won't follow you overseas -- it's not really an international criminal case. It doesn't require extradition.

I agree with peterpanamerican - however, when you return to the country, and the statute of limitations on that debt, in your state, has not yet expired, expect to get collection calls.

Credit card debt and leaving the country -I also agree with them, not only is the SoL the issue, but also if the creditor sued you for judgment when you left- and came back - I'm not sure if the enforcement of a judgment has a time limit--but that would be applicable to you once you get back to the country.

Ah that's good news - but do you think I should file bankruptcy before leaving?

As a responsible citizen, maybe you should, if you are not planning on returning anyway, then that won't really have an impact on your credit. It's really if you return or when you return (especially within the SoL period on that debt) that should concern you.

You know might as well take of that debt while you're still able to? You never know how life's going to turn out, you may not plan on getting back to the country, but what if something happens, and you have to -- you really don't want a problem like a judgment to be welcoming you back. There are debt relief options for you - if you're interested.

So basically if you have credit card debt and are leaving the country - you'd be leaving the debt here.If you are coming back - your issues would be your credit standing, as well as a possible legal action.Incidentally - destroydebt.com is offering a free initial debt consultation, just fill out a form.
