Hi yazoo, since the debt settlement industry is still largely unregulated, what they do to avoid being accused of being scam companies, they become members of associations such as:Better Business Bureau BBB www.bbb.orgThe Association Of Settlement Companies TASC www.tascsite.orgUSOBA www.usoba.or International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators IAPDA www.iapda.orgAnd the A+ rating from the BBB means that it's a good company.

I agree with the above post, but a company having great credentials still doesn't guarantee the success of your debt settlement program - your financial situation and their program must actually match...to prevent you from withdrawing or quitting at the middle of which. Remember that a typical settlement program lasts for 12-36 months.Incidentally, destroydebt.com has a free initial debt consultation, just fill out a form, and get matched up to the right company. With the new laws that went into affect Oct. 27th 2010 not allowing Debt Settlement Companies to "front loan fees" any longer,anyone that is already enrolled with any Debt Settlement Company is in DANGER! The new law only allows Debt Settlement companies to charge a 10% fee but not untill services have been rendered, so they will not see a profit from a new client for 1-2 years. Now, some Debt Settlement companyies have up to 30,000 clients where they already front loaded fees but still havent settled one account so do you really think the company is going to take money out of their own pocket to cover the payroll so these exsisting clients debts can start being settled on the 30k people making NO MONEY AT ALL for 2 yrs????ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! Owners of these debt settlement companies that have front loaded the fees are grimey and are not going to change their lifestyles to do the right thing and once they go bankrupt or close, there is no way for anyone to get the 100% refund that all settlement customer's are entitled to when debts are not yet settled by that settlement company so EVERYONE NEEDS TO BE PROACTIVE, I work at an attorney refferal service that helps people get the 100% refund that they are entitled to as well as get the credit card debt COMPLETELY ELIMINATED AS WELL AS THE TRADLINE!!!! This is done by REAL ATTORNEY'S that are regulated by the Bar, not a debt settlement company using an attorney based model or attorney owned company that means nothing!! The problem with debt settlement companies is that nobody is accountable for ANYTHING!!!!! On the other hand, if an attorney starts deceiving people like a debt settlement company there is a high probability that he/she will be DISBARRED!!
