Some of the non profit debt consolidation agencies work for the creditors. If you work for a particular debt consolidation agency--a credit counseling firm, in particular--they receive a certain percentage of your current debt amount from the creditors that they work with. The amount ranges from 4-10% of your total debt.

Just because a non profit debt consolidation agency is, well, "non profit" doesn't mean that its services are free or even legitimate. There are some companies that charge monthly fees even if they claim to be non-profit.

Just to pick up on where Purple Cow left off... and that concept is called "free share." It used to be 15%, but a number of consumers got wound of this, and in my understanding they appealed to the business sector, and the amount was decreased to 4-10%. Apparently a lot of consumers are not aware of these facts, too.

It's also a great help if the non profit debt consolidation agencies you may be working with are affiliated with the
NFCC. . .
