One tips on self help debt settlement-- you need to be assertive and inform the creditor in reference to your situation. If possible, you can write a letter to your creditor explaining your situation. One possible drawback in DIY debt settlement is that certain creditors do not agree to make room or allowance for consumers who want to settle debts. It is their money, after all, and they will do any means possible to get their money back.

Adrian King: Discover is one of the creditors that do not accept nor offer settlements to their clients. What they do have are loans that have single digit APR's which their clients can use to pay off their debts. This is just me, but that really isn't a good idea if debt elimination is indeed the primary goal.Sarah: As far as I know there are no self help debt settlement books, but I may be wrong. Can someone verify this?
