With regard to your credit card and other unsecured accounts, you can be debt free in 5 years if you consolidate them all together in a credit counseling debt management plan, or DMP. You'll only be enrolled to this program upon the discretion of your credit counselor.

Being debt free in 5 years thru a debt management program also helps you pay for lesser interest rate and minimal fees. Also, any payment that you make towards your credit counseling company will be evenly distributed to all your creditors.

Are those claims from authors like Greg Moore, John Commuta, etc who say that people can be debt free in 5 years any true?

Are those claims from authors like Greg Moore, John Commuta, etc who say that people can be debt free in 5 years any true?Greg Moore's Debt into Wealth has a lot of good feedback from different consumers and I have yet to hear from someone who actually has availed of this particular program. He claims that even a 20+ year mortgage can be payable in as little as 5-7 years. His program includes all debts also, and he highly discourages using credit as you're in the process of paying everything off.John Commuta, as far as I know, is a scam.

Most of the consumers who have subscribed to his services claim that the same information can be found on the Internet for free.

Can't you also be debt free in 5 years if you get a home equity loan to pay everything off?

Godzee makes a good point. A debt relief coach once told me that getting out of debt is like losing weight--you have to do it a little at a time, and work hard to achieve your goal. Keeping focused on this will enable you to do much more, and as you see the changes in your life by staying on track, you'll be pressed to do more until you hit your target.
