How does one get help to pay the bills?Have you already separated your bill type? Secured from the unsecured? If it is mortgage payment, try to talk to your lender, and ask if deferring a couple months of mortgage payments is possible. Then just add those payments to the next ten months or so. Ask if it's possible to adjust the payment terms.

How does one get help to pay the bills? - utilitiesIt's best to contact the company and ask to be given a referral to the Home Energy Assistance Program or HEAP-- I read that utility companies have government funding to help reduce the bills of those who are in need (if they qualify).

How does one get help to pay the bills? - student loansJust like with mortgage, for student loans, do ask for a deferment. I don't know what else can be done with private loans but part of a for federal student loan can be canceled by working in public service jobs (teachers, nurses, doctors and lawyers, Peace Corps volunteers, etc.)

How does one get help to pay the bills? - credit card billsHi, unfortunately, since it is a private consumer debt -- I don't think there exist government help for that. However, if you are experiencing hardship, all you have to do is communicate that to your creditors and ask for their hardship program.

How does one get help to pay the bills? - credit card billsWhat the previous poster was referring to is a do-it-yourself negotiation with your creditors. Depending on your account status (current or past due) and your debt amount -- it is possible for the creditors (or their collection arm/agency) to agree to a reduction of either the interest rates or the principle amount -- even the payment terms. But you are going to have to prove your hardship. And if you don't want it d.i.y. you can enroll in a credit counseling or debt settlement program.
