I don't live in the United States, and haven't for awhile. Can I still file for bankruptcy?

To be eligible you must either reside in a state you are filing in, own a business or property in that state or that you must have resided in that state for 180 days prior to filing bankruptcy. If those doesn't apply to you, you cannot file bankruptcy in the US until you return and do those all over again - stay for 180 days, go away again, but you would have to appear for the creditors/trustee's meeting..i think, not sure. Can somebody please verify these?

I don't think it still makes any sense for you to file bankruptcy if you're away from the country. Why not start over in your new location instead?

Right. On the practical scheme of things, it may waste you time and money.

Have you received anything from your creditors yet? Like perhaps a warning that they are going to take legal action against you should you not pay on a specific deadline? Or have you heard from a collection agency? If not, I think it's best to wait until you're back in the country to deal with it.

I know how that is before I moved here I had a great amount of debt over in another country so I had to return from that country and make some arrangements to pay it off
