How should I respond to a letter from the creditors with a court date on it? I assume it is for my credit card debts. I am unemployed, what shall I do with this?

Did you say from the creditors? As for as I know, creditors don't really sue a consumer because they pass the debt to a collection agency (which they most likely own too) and then if the agency fails to collect, your account gets sold to junk debt buyers.

I think it's from a law office hired by the collection agency to collect for them - because perhaps it's been a year or so and you haven't sufficiently explained yourself to them? Or you did not reach an agreement with regards to just how much you can afford to pay them?
What you can do is attend that court date and have them verify your debt...clearly, you do not understand what had just happened, and perhaps they'd give you more time to respond properly? Also, consult with a lawyer..

Yeah I agree, the best thing to do is have them prove their claim. Attend that hearing and ask for these: verified statements and copies of signed receipts (I looked those up for you.)

Prove their claim (if that account was really rightfully assigned to them) and verify the debt (the amount you owe, the original creditors info, and how they arrived at the amount that they claim you owe)

Court date for credit card debt- what can the consumer do to avoid receiving this?

Court date for credit card debt- what can the consumer do to avoid receiving this?
I think a relevant question to that is: What is the credit card collection process?
The consumer has to know that so he/she can manage payments better.

I think a relevant question to that is: What is the credit card collection process? As far as I know, collection agencies have varying practices, but most creditors will collect in-house for 6 months. After 6 months have to write the debt off to the IRS, and assign the debt to a collection agency (they would attempt to collect in 3 or 6 month cycles- if unsuccessful the account might be sold to junk buyers) or send the account to an attorney's office for collection.

Respond appropriately and on time.
If the consumer is having a tough time keeping up with the payments, he/she can try to negotiate the payment terms with the creditors, and if they don't agree -- perhaps the consumer should consult with a debt consultant for debt reduction/elimination options.

I agree. Creditors nowadays are open to the idea of collecting something rather than nothing - but it depends on the consumer's case.
