What to do when behind on bills?Which bills are these? If it is for rent or for your house, contact your lender/landlord and inform them of the reason for the late payments. If it is for your service provider, let them know too, and arrange another payment plan perhaps. If it is the creditors, the same thing, try to negotiate with them.

Another more specific question to ask is
What to do when behind on credit card bills? It depends on how much it is that you owe and if by 'behind' you meant 'past due'
Why?Because if you owe less than $10,000 (account current) and your goal is just to manage your payment and not really eliminate it all at once, the debt relief program that you can try is credit counseling (Debt Management Plan)
If it is more than $10,000 and the accounts past due, it's debt settlement for you.

What to do when behind on credit card bills?Credit counseling and debt settlement are professional debt relief services that are available for you -- only if you want to and if you think you can afford them. You may also do a debt negotiation/settlement yourself -- only if you're confident enough about your situation qualifying for the creditors hardship programs and of course your negotiating skills.

What to do when behind on credit card bills? -- And if already getting collection calls?Don't panic. What your next move depends on if the collection calls are still from the original creditors or a collection agency.Don't dodge the calls, or at least answer one to find out what they want exactly, and then from there, you would know what to do.If you don't....

If it so happens that you're getting calls from a collection agency -Expect to also receive a letter from them, 5 days after they first contacted you.In that letter: the amount you owe, creditor information, and what you can do to have that debt verified. If it is not your debt, write them a cease and desist letter.
