If your debt are mostly unsecured, you might want to look into credit counseling or debt settlement. Don't jump into bankruptcy or debt consolidation loans immediately. Don't even think of borrowing from your 401k or your home equity.

I agree, two of the more popular the American credit card solutions these days are credit counseling (with their Debt Management Plan) for balances lower than $10,000 and then debt settlement, for balances that are more than that amount, with mostly past due accounts.

If you want to do it by yourself and not have the professionals help you eliminate or reduce your debt - you can do so by contacting your creditors one by one and negotiate. That's not an easy task though as you have to know just how much each of them settles for. Doing it alone might not give you the best deal.
