Negotiating with credit collectors can be a daunting task. Most, if not all of them, are dead-set on collecting the entire balance from you to satisfy their obligations with their client, the creditors. More often than not some debt collectors have payment plans that they offer in order for a consumer to be able to pay a little at a time.

In negotiating with credit collectors:It helps to be firm and assertive. They have a tendency to bully debtors into submission by making arrangements that the debtors cannot pay in the first place, but you have to be careful. Explain your situation calmly with the collector. Ask for a manager if need be.

Negotiations can be difficult with any creditor. The only sound advice anyone can give you is always get a name and extention of the person you spoke with and always get any settlement offer in writing! In regards to collectors:  you have to give respect, to get respect. They dont like negotiating with current customers. They figure if you are current you can afford the payment. Most settlement offers come at the very last stages of collections right before lawsuits begin.

Never, ever use the "bankruptcy" card as an excuse in stopping and not negotiating with credit collectors. Most consumers do this as a way to evade the collection calls. In reality, this trick backfires--the collections representative will document this information on your account, and they in turn will report it to the creditor. Your creditor may report this information on the credit bureau, eventually.
