Chapter 13 bankruptcy, which is a form of debt consolidation, has drastic effects on your credit score. It stays on your credit for seven years, and on your public records for 20.

Does debt consolidation ruin your credit? For the most part I do not think it does. Having debt in itself ruins your credit, and since the purpose of debt consolidation is actually to provide relief, debt consolidation can actually help you in making payments to get you back in shape and eventually regain your good credit.

Debt settlement may be able to help you do that, because it will only take you a year at the shortest to be able to complete your settlement. In regard to the query of "does debt consolidation ruin your credit," debt settlement may be able to help you get back in shape faster--but that depends on your current credit rating of course.

As for me, debt settlement--or any debt consolidation method, for that matter--is better than filing for bankruptcy outright.
