Hi, Sweet Pink Cardigan!

There are various ways of getting out of debt. Thankfully they are not just limited to bankruptcy, because this has often been the more popular choice for consumers once their financial situation has gone out of hand.

One option of getting out of debt is of thru debt consolidation. Since you've mentioned that you are on a tight monthly budget, I hope you don't mind me asking--do you have disposable income? Debt consolidation allows you to help pay for your bills and be able to stick to your budget at the same time.

Feel free to fill us in on your current financial situation. If you're not comfortable doing that on a public forum, you can log on to DestroyDebt.com and fill out a form on the main website. You'll be matched with a qualified provider from there. The service is free, so it won't hurt.

I'm ok with sharing my info here, thanks. So I just lost my job and thankfully I have savings left over to last me about a month. I'm moving out of my apartment to live in a friend's house for the meantime coz I know I can't keep up with rent, and I have lots of credit card bills to pay, plus the fact that I might lose my car. My debt for the cards is at $15,000 and I am looking for ways of getting out of debt so I can have my own place soon and still be able to keep my car

Are your credit cards in delinquency at this point? Because one of the ways to getting out of debt--the credit card debt in particular--is through a debt settlement, given the current amount of debt that you have.

Debt settlement is one of the ways of getting out of debt. When you enroll your account in a debt settlement service, the third-party negotiator will speak with your creditor and, well, negotiate on an amount that is lower than the current balance that you owe. The negotiators are typically trained professionals who are knowledgeable about the ins and outs of the companies that they would be working with.

The settlement amount that you may receive from the creditor would vary, but typically you'll be given 12-36 months for the settlement amount to be completed.

As one of the ways of getting out of debt, it's relatively faster--you also have the option of paying it in a lump sum.

One of the ways of getting out of debt is by garnering money for that. I mean like doing a garage sale or something like that. It works for a lot of people apparently.

That's a nice suggestion Mei mei. Did it work for you?

Definitely getting rid of things that we no longer need is always one of the good ways of getting out of debt. Not only do you acquire enough money for funds to pay off the debt, but it frees up a lot of space in your home also.
