Has anybody here worked with Zwicker and Associates? I received a letter from them on my American Express card... Can't I just deal directly with my creditor instead of speaking with these people?

From the looks of it Zwicker and Associates is a debt collection law firm. I have yet to see any good feedback on these guys... All I see are consumer complaints.

You can try check them out at the BBB website.

Zwicker and Associates has received numerous complaints from consumers, as listed in their BBB rating. They are not members of the Bureau and have received an F rating from them.  Most of these complaints particularly deal with improper collections practices.

A more exhaustive summary on the BBB ratings and complaints record can be found here.

But aren't all debt collection companies, such as Zwicker and Associates, have such bad reputations? Tsk tsk.

Which brings me this though: Is it more advisable to work with a debt consolidation firm, then, instead of these guys? It's so much scary, I wouldn't want to risk my security if I work with any collection firm.

I have some very sound advice.  I had credit problems over 5 years ago.  The law, FDCPA and in my case The Texas Debt Collection Act in my state can protect us.

If you have not made a payment to the original creditor in 4 years, that is Texas statutes of limitations, then the debt is gone.  These big credit companies sell these notes to people like Zucker, they try everyway to scare the debtor to death.

Check your states statutes of limitations, do not talk to these collection companies, and don't try to go back to the original creditor because they will not have your original info.  These notes get passed from one group to another.

There is so much debt, these collectors are ruthless, but do not let them frighten you, but remember this, if you send them, the collection company that bought the note you will have started the Statutes of Limitations all over again.

These collection people will say they work for AMEX, Discover, when actually that is who they bought the notes from.  This Zwicker company was sued by American Express for collecting debt with out their permission and did not pay the debt back to them

Everyone must be smart and think smart and do not let these collectors get the best of you,   I have even seen collection letters that have the original credit card logo on the letters and after a bit of researching found out that the truth was the note was sold.  So this Zwicker is lying if they say they represent Discover, they do not, they just bought the notes.

bananarama you cand send your paymnts to american express but you had your chance to pay them and obviously you didnt. they will be applied to your account but they are just considered a gratuitous payments so you could still be sued. now they have a law firm. i suggest you cll zwicker and set up some payments.

Come on folks...you seriously want to know why all debt collection companies have  so many complaints or bad reputations?  Because people being pursued by companies who want them to pay their debt are angry!  Do you think they are going to post "Gee those folks at Zwicker and Associates were so awesome when they garnished my bank account for the credit cards I stopped paying."  You only hear the negative because these firms are effective and people get mad when they are forced to pay the bills that they ran up.  Stop making excuses.  Pay your bills; if life snuck up on you and you have employment/medical problems then talk to a bankruptcy attorney.  Your anger is directed at the wrong people.  Take care of your debt one way or the other.

I don't think bankruptcy should be the immediate solution to the problem. There are other options available if people aren't able to get their debts taken care of.
