I don't know why college education is not free, if you ask me. I know we are in a capitalist environment and all and therefore nothing is free but for people who can't afford to pay the product of this so called capitalism - overwhelming debt, the government at least has bankruptcy but can bankruptcy cover student loans?

I share your sentiments my friend. But the answer to your question, can bankruptcy cover student loans? - is no. Unless you can show "substantial hardship." It means that you really are not able to maintain a minimally adequate standard of living and repay the loan too.

can bankruptcy cover student loans? possibly -- but it can be contested by the creditors, although the burden of proof is on the creditors themeselves.

I see, thank you gentlemen. And at least there's a federal regulation that restricts the amount to be garnished (from the wages) to 10% in repayment of student loans. Would the lenders have the right to intercept my tax refunds?

In 2004, 35 % of all first-year students were paying for their own education in state institutions and 20 % were enrolled in private universities. -- I'm sure that saddens you, as your Russia is fast acquiring the evils of the west...one of which is being forever in debt.It's a good thing that there is such a thing as alternative debt relief options. There's always debt settlement..
