My so has been on disability, ssi, for approx 10 years. He has accumulated debts approx 5000.00. Obviously if he could pay these he would however he is raising a son on approx 900.00 a month. His problem is coming up with the fee to pay for bankruptcy. Does anyone know of any pro-bono, disability attorney, he lives in Florida. Thank you

Hi there, instead of filing bankruptcy, why don't you try credit counseling instead? That is if that $5000 is unsecured debt...what credit counseling can do through its Debt Management Plan (DMP) is negotiate the interest rates so your son can pay down the principle amount much quicker.

If you're really convinced that bankruptcy is the way to go - you can check this site: http://www.abanet.org/legalservices/probono/directory/florida.htmlAlthough, I think that you should explore your other debt relief options or - why not try negotiating with the creditors yourself? Ask for their hardship program.

I'm not sure if there are bankruptcy attorneys that'll offer their full services for free--but there are a lot that would give free initial consultation. If you self-represent, better get a copy of the Nolo bankruptcy books, as the court is going to treat you like it treats a bankruptcy expert.May I ask why you are filing bankruptcy? Perhaps the people in the thread can help you avoid it..

Whether or not the consumer has a disability filing bankruptcy is still discouraged for unsecured debts. For debts not more than $10,000 the consumer can instead do credit counseling. If it's over $10,000, and the accounts are past due, try debt settlement. They are much better for the credit.

Whether or not the consumer has a disability filing bankruptcy is still discouraged for unsecured debts.I agree and if you are wondering how much these services are going to cost:Credit counseling is non-profit but their Debt Management Plan would cost around $25/mo. after the one time set up fee.Debt settlement companies would charge 15% of your total debt amount -spread over 18 months or they will take between 20-25% of the settlement amount.
