When we're talking all about debt settlement, there are basically two types for that: first is settling your debt with a company; second is to settle the debt yourself. Hiring the services of a debt settlement company entails having to pay a 15% set up fee which you'll be paying between a 1-1.5 year period. On the other hand, settling the debt yourself is free but may prove to be a daunting task, as creditors may want you to adhere to the payments that they want to receive from you, or deny your request to settle altogether.

All about debt settlement-- you also need to bear in mind that an account will appear as "settled" on your credit report once the payment has been completed.

Hannah: that depends on what is negotiated between the creditor and the debt settlement company that you would hire. Different companies guarantee different percentages; one company may promise a range of 20-50% off of the balance, while another company would offer 30-70%. Of course since we're talking all about debt settlement, we also need to touch on do-it-yourself debt settlement--has anyone here on the forum made an arrangement with a creditor themselves? Share your experience here!

Debt settlement is a tricky situation because there are so many pros and cons depending on your individual situation and ultimate goal. I think the main thing to remember is that you can do it yourself if you have the time and effort. The companies that do this can really gouge you if your nto careful. DO YOUR RESEARCH on the company before you sign any paperwork. USOBA.org regualtes debt settlement companies.
