Nobody wants to take me in anymore because I'm not exactly young. I've lost my job and have been looking for one since god knows when- with no success. I have bills to pay. I'm overdue. 'Have been unable to pay for months. I'm getting calls and I am just irritated. It's all so unfair. Why should I pay my bills if I'm willing to work and nobody would take me?

Why should I pay my bills when I'm unemployed ..seems to be your question. Do you have other source of income? Did you already apply for unemployment benefits? You know you can use the check from there to enroll in a debt relief program..

Perhaps the better question to ask is how should I pay my bills or how can I pay my bills now that I am unemployed (?)The previous post already mentioned unemployment benefits. How about properties? Perhaps you have collections or items that you can sell to help pay for your bills...and by the way, what bills are we talking about here? Credit cards and utility?Perhaps you should contact your service providers and inform them of your situation and ask them what can be done so you can manage your bills..

You've already mentioned collection calls, have you already received a validation or written notice? Within 5 days after the first call, your collectors must send you a written notice containing the amount you owe, the name of your creditors and what you can do if you think you don't owe that debt.Until they're able to validate that debt, you are to do or say anything, especially if that debt is over your state's Statute of Limitations, admitting to that debt or promising to pay it might reset the clock. The usual SoL in many states is 6 years. However if you are in California it's 4. So check for your state's SoL here: http://www.fair-debt-collection.com/SOL-by-State.html

If it is credit card bills that you're worried about - don't worry it can be eliminated via debt settlement or credit counseling. How much is it that you owe?If you owe $10,000 or more you may qualify in a debt settlement program. What it can do for you is minimize if not stop the collection calls, cut your total debt into more or less half of its original amount, settle your debt, and improve your credit standing. If on the other hand it's less than $10,000 and the interest rates are high, you might want to try credit counseling.

If the consumer doesn't pay the bills, is unable to pay bills, does not want to pay the bills, is it possible for him to go to jail?

Why should I pay my bills? There are going to be repercussions if you don't. Not that you're to go to jail...unless you've committed a criminal act -- it's more in the line of your bank account being levied, your wages (once you are back to being employed) being garnished, and a lien on your property. Before those happen though, your collectors must first sue you, and you must first respond to the suit. Why should you respond to the suit?So you can negotiate the payment terms and even the amount. But don't wait for that. You can have your debts negotiated now.If you need advice or guidance as to how to go about it, please feel free to fill out a form here at destroydebt.com. A debt consultant would contact you and help you navigate your way out of debt. It's free.

the question is why he has to pay all his bills , if he can't get a job I don't think that you're a 60 y.o cause if you're not than I won't believe you about not getting a job.If you good at what you do, then I don't see a reason why they won't hire you. About unemployment benefits,as I know, you can't get them, unless you have a 6 month verifiable employment. There are lots of agencies(free), all they do is job search locally.Usually they find you job for your proffession.Even if they can't you always can go some other place or learn new trade(as an alternative)possibilities are there. It's your bills and if you don't want to pay them(even later) thats not an excuse.

Op has been out of work for a few months, and thus is only few months overdue. OP if I am wrong correct me but that is how I took it. If he is only a few months behind it is very unlikely his creditors have already sent it to a third party collection agency/attorney. I know for a fact Capital One Bank waits at least 180 days just to charge off the account. So therefore it is likely that his original creditors are calling him and thus he would not be protected by the FDCPA, nor would the SOL have run out. I apologize in advance if that sounded harsh but the level of critical thinking on this forum makes me want to pull my hair out.
