I have not worked with Debtmerica LLC but I know they have an F rating with the Better Business Bureau. The BBB sites, "...they have failed to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly misleading...." among other things. If you want to get matched up with a reputable feel free to fill out a form on DestroyDebt.Com- it is free if you are wondering.

They are however members of the Association of Debt Settlement Companies. They have also made ways to reach out to people to take care of their debts. You can read more about it here.

Is Debtmerica LLC a non-profit company? And Did the Reuters article come out before the BBB rating or after?

Debtmerica LLC is not a non-profit company--to begin with, there aren't non-profit debt settlement companies that exist. Typically these organizations charge a set-up fee amounting to 15% of the consumer's total debt amount.

Debtmerica is a good company but they have a bad BBB rating.  I was going to go on their program but I went with an attorney.  The lewin law group only charges a small retainer fee and a small % of the savings.  They saved me 70% of my debt.  The person that helped me was John Lee at 866-733-3452 x 228.

Funny, you posted on a separate thread saying the same thing under a different name. You wouldn't happen to work for Lewin Law Group would you? Ha.And trashing Debtmerica's BBB rating isn't very intelligent considering the following:Anyone considering working with the Lewin Law Group should know that the Better Business Bureau gives them an F rating, citing, "We strongly question the company's reliability for reasons such as that they have failed to respond to complaints, their advertising is grossly misleading, they are not in compliance with the law's licensing or registration requirements, their complaints contain especially serious allegations, or the company's industry is known for its fraudulent business practices." Better rethink your marketing scheme.

That doesn't make any sense- why would you go with a settlement company, even if they are a law firm, if they have a horrible Better Business Burea grade?

Well- the reality is, the majority of debt settlement companies do not have a good rating with the BBB, so regardless of whether or not they use the attorney model, you can expect to see a D or an F for most. It is important to note that the BBB is opposed, for now anyway, to the industry as a whole considering how unregulated it is. Once the industry stabilizes, I think we will see a balancing out of judgment and more settlement companies with better ratings.

What is the gauge, then for the debt settlement industry to be regulated? What factors will need to be considered in order for this industry to establish trust with the consumers?
