Here are the California bankruptcy fees that the court has set excluding the attorneys fees:

Chapter 7:   $299.00

Chapter 13: $274.00

Chapter 11: $1,039.00

How much would you say, approximately, it would cost (including the attorney's fees) the consumer to file bankruptcy in California?

To answer The Question--I am not an attorney, and of course, an attorney could best answer this, but I assume that it would be tough, if not impossible, to give a quote or an estimate without knowing the consumer's financial background.

The consumer should first undergo a bankruptcy consultation with a financial expert or with the bankruptcy lawyer himself.

I don't know how much California lawyers charge, but typically, bankruptcy lawyers can charge $1,000 to $2,000 per case...can somebody verify this?

I think that that is the industry rate for a full lawyer service. Meaning, the bankruptcy lawyer takes on the consumer's case, or what's known as a full representation. There is another option that the consumer can take, if he/she can't afford a lawyer, it's called a bundled service. Wherein the consumer represents himself/herself in court, and the lawyer takes care of the other parts of bankruptcy, like a consultant.

Okay, a full-service representation, as nobodysaiditwaseasy has said, means that the lawyer is going to be the one to worry about the filing and filing dates, also the accuracy of the papers (credit report, tax return, home value appraisal, etc.)--all responsibilities fall unto the lawyer and if for example, he commits a major mistake, like file your case under Chapter 13 when it was to supposed to be for Chapter 13, this lawyer is going to be seriously fined by the court and he would have to return your fees.

I heard that the bankruptcy lawyer fees in California starts at $1,200-$1,500 plus the filing fee, that's for Chapter 7. And then a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy starts at $3,500.00--this is due to Chapter 13 Bankruptcy being more complex and it lasts longer than a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.
