Hi, song on a hill, maybe you meant non profit debt counseling? Because that actually is the only non-profit type of debt consolidation that comes closest to "consultation." If you mean by having a certified credit counselor sit down with you and discuss budget tips, financial management, and enrolment in a debt management program, maybe that is exactly what you're looking for.

If i'm not mistaken non profit debt consultation is another term for non profit credit counseling, and they do function the same way I guess. You need to do extensive homework on choosing the right company. For one, since they claim to be non-profit, they shouldn't be asking you for any payments or "voluntary contributions."Also take note of the specific company's rating with the Better Business Bureau. You can check it out at http://www.bbb.org. Working with a company who has been on the marketplace for some time now and has few complaints may be best for you.

Arent the non-proft ones usually scammers? Are there regulatory agencies on top of these non profit debt consulation companies anyway?

For the most part not all of the non-proft companies are scammers. As long as there is accreditation by the National Foundation for Credit Counseling and if the company is a (501) (c) certified organization, you're good to go.

One thing you also need to take note of is the company's rating with the Better Business Bureau. you can find the information on a specific company at http://www.bbb.org. A company that has a high rating from the BBB and few complaints is a good company to work with. You'll know thru that that the company does not compromise its integrity and maintains a good working relationship with its clients.

Or, instead of non-profit debt consultation, do you perhaps mean you are looking for a free debt consultation? If that is the case I know that most credit counseling agencies and debt settlement agencies offer free debt consultations for anyone who is interested in their services. Now- to address deceived- yes, it is true that a lot of non-profit credit counseling agencies are owned and funded by the creditors. So, when someone signs up with their agency, the creditor gives them a kickback.

The non-profit debt consultation companies uised to receive 15% of the total debt amount from the creditors themselves. Now it has been reduced to a variable range of 4-10%.
