They are neither members of TASC nor accredited by the BBB. TASC stands for the Association of Settlement Companies, and they lobby for debt settlement companies' rights and promote the best interests of their clients. The Better Business Bureau on the other hand upholds trust and integrity in the marketplace. It's always a safe bet to work with a company who bears these affiliations to ensure that you're receiving the service that you need.

Debt settlement companies like Debt Help America that are not even a member of TASC nor accredited by the BBB-as Purple Cow has said, hurt the image of the debt settlement industry, each time they victimize a consumer. It's important for the consumer who is need of a debt relief option, that works, to do his/her homework and know what to look for in a company.

A good debt settlement company in America, that's not out to scam the consumers, but genuinely help them get out of debt must provide the following:-a detailed list of all fees associated with the service. The consumer should also ask if the company has application and servicing fees that are not included in the monthly cost.-an outline of services and guarantees. Like an invoice. An itemized list of services and cost would help the consumer compare one company's package with another.-company history, how long have the company been in business. The consumer should also inquire about complaints or legal actions that have been taken against the company--if any. The consumer should also be wary of P.O. Box addresses provided by the company. A legitimate company would have an actual physical address.

I agree, in addition:The consumer should find out whether the debt settlement company is requiring its clients to save funds in an escrow account or in a personal savings account. Either way is harmless but the consumer has to know if there are going to be any additional fees for the escrow account. The settlement company must also be able to provide the consumer with a time line of completion (of the program). This usually happens after the company has provided the consumer with a free debt consultation.

Did you ask Debt Help America if they allow their clients to cancel fees if the need arise or what's going to happen to the money in the escrow account should should the consumer cancels the services? A good debt settlement company would have an answer that looks out for the consumer's best interest.
