how to identify a scam debt relief? - don't fall for their pitch. They usually have one. Remember, if it's too good to be true? It probably is.

how to identify a scam debt relief? - which debt relief program are we talking about here? credit counseling or debt settlement? And one way to find out if the company/agency is legitimate is to ask about their fees. They should be industry standard. And they should be open to discussionwhen it comes to fee structure.

Right, if you're going to sign up for credit counseling, know that it's supposed to be non-profit, but if you say yes to their Debt Management Plan (DMP) - which negotiates your interest rates so you can be debt free in 3-5 years (if you don't drop out) - it's to cost you $25/mo.

And for debt settlement, it's 15% of your total debt amount, spread over 18 months. Another structure is 20-25% of the settlement amount. There might be other structures, don't forget to ask about them, and don't forget to accept only what you can afford (within the said standards). The program runs for 1 to 3 years.
