Accreditation with the Association of Settlement Companies (http://www.tascsite.org) is a plus. This agency has high standards in terms of quality and business practice, so if the company that you have in mind is a member of this organization, you're good to go.

It may also help if the company in question has zero to few complaints with the Better Business Bureau. At least you'd know that they perform fair and ethical business practice and are after your best interest.

Right, accreditation does help a lot in looking for the right debt settlement company. In fact you can also try checking out if the company is affiliated with the Council of Accreditation (COA), to see if the company you're looking out for adheres to industry standards and policies. If the company is also a member of the International Association of Professional Debt Arbitrators, I think it would be a plus for you too

do all debt settlement companies charge a set-up fee for their services? or are there any non-profit companies out there?

It ranges from 15-25% of your total debt amount. I do not have any knowledge of non-profit debt settlement companies on the market--legitimate ones that is.

To add to what Purple Cow mentioned- you can go to the BBB website at
www.bbb.org to take a look at a debt settlement company's profile. The BBB now grades each debt settlement company using the standard A to F scale. You can also find out when looking at these profiles how long the company has been in business for, how many employees they have and as previously mentioned how many complaints have been filed with the BBB against them.

Maybe, but keep in mind that Debt Settlement is an extremely new industry when you think of it in big picture terms. In fact, a lot of companies are less than 10 years old, so that is somewhat of a generalization. The best way to find out if the company is reputable is to make sure they are members of the previously mentioned organizations, and to make sure they do not have an overwhelming amount of complaints with the BBB as that is where the majority of consumers turn to if they aren't happy with a particular company. And please dot advertise on this site as your posts will simply be removed.
