If you are trying to get debt counseling without trying to settle your debts, you would want to look into credit counseling as an alternative. These credit counseling agencies disperse monthly payments on behalf of their clients and attempt to lower their interest rates in the meantime. In addition, a lot of these debt counseling agencies provide educational tools for their clients to use that help them manage their finances as they move through and after the program. Be aware though the credit counseling, or debt counseling, is not for everyone. For example, if you are already behind on your payments, it is likely that debt settlement is a better option (of course that depends on how much you owe). Feel free to fill out a form on DestroyDebt.Com to get matched up with a qualified provider.

Most creditors will open the doors to negotiation on the principle amount of debt if the person is roughly 150 days past due (has missed 5 consecutive minimum monthly payments).
