If the consumer is already in debt trouble? Negotiate. Don't run away or hide from the creditors/collectors.

If the consumer is current on his/her account but is having a hard time getting to the balance...
Negotiate the interest rates and get rid of the debt a.s.a.p.  Get credit counseling. The consumer may or may not enroll in the debt management plan.

If the consumer accounts are already past due and amounts to $10,000, try to settle the debt. D.I.Y. or an enrollment with a settlement program.

However, if the consumer is already facing a lawsuit, then perhaps debt reduction is not the issue anymore, but temporary protection from a possible judgment.
