There are several industries to choose from, I suppose you can start with knowing what debt elimination solution is the right one for your debt type? You can opt for credit counseling, debt consolidation, debt settlement, and even bankruptcy. If you need advice or guidance for your particular situation, speak with a professional debt consultant for free-fill out one of those mustard colored forms that you see around. Find out what kind of debt experts they are in the process..

peterpanamerican mentioned debt consolidation as a possible source of debt experts. what it can do for you is combine your debts into one, and making one monthly payment to a single creditor instead of making multiple payments to several reditors. Debt consolidation comes in several forms, including credit counseling, balance transfers, and loans--credit counseling on the other hand does not extend you a loan-it negotiates with your creditors with regards to you interest rates and balance. you pay them monthly and they pay the creditors for you.debt settlements do the same, they negotiate your balance to almost half of its original amount. so before you decide on which one suits your situation best, avail of (fill out) those free consultation forms that you see around, since you are in this thread anyway.

those debt elimination industries mentioned by peterpanamerican and a.goldberg are also known as the alternative to bankruptcy.it would benefit both you and the creditor if you can avoid bankruptcy. mostly you though, as it is bad for your credit report. a chapter 13 bankruptcy would benefit your creditor more while you'd end up repaying for years.

And there are also those who claim to be debt experts- debt elimination scams as you called them, or those who ask you for a huge upfront fee or if you ask them about their fees, they give you the run around. if the company or the representative is legitimate, it would answer your inquiries directly. you might want to study the modus operandi of these scammers--one of which is they come to you instead of you going to them.

can attorneys be considered debt experts too? the know the law...and is the term "debt expert" an official job title?

I'm not sure about the term "debt expert" being an official job title. Actually, I don't know at all.Regarding the attorney being a debt expert, perhaps "debt consultant" or a representative of the case is the more appropriate term? It could also be that the lawyer is in a state that permits  him/her practicing law and a business that deals with debt. But if the client's case is a routine debt case--meaning he/she has not been informed that the collection agency is suing him/her then perhaps there is no need for a lawyer/debt expert ..

Anybody claiming to be an expert on anything should have an excellent track record to prove it. That's my opinion.

I agree. There are organizations that can verify the legitimacy of these companies, aside from the Better Business Bureau (BBB)- the consumers can check with the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC), the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCCA) and the American Association of Debt Management Organizations (AADMO) for credit counseling. The United States Organization for Bankruptcy Alternatives (USOBA) and the Trade Association of Settlement Companies (TASC) for debt settlement.

mr. rasputin is scary but i agree with him too. any expert would not have so much complaint on his/her record. also if they can't be found in the BBB listings, maybe the consumer should look for one that is on it.
