Mhm telling them that there are people in a more desperate situation doesn't change their own situation binomial nomenclature....they are still in debt and depressed.

This reminds me of a friend. She said that when she someday have a daughter, and the kid feels that she's ugly, she's not going to tell her kid that there are other uglier kids out there to make her feel better--because the kid would grow up someday and go..."hey wait a minute, didn't my mother just call me ugly TOO, then?!" And it really doesn't change the perception a bit.

I suppose the consumer that's in debt and also depressed really can't do anything to help herself/himself.

Quiz:

Is it your debt that's causing the depression?

Or other factors not related to your finances?
Are you really depressed? Or just a little stressed out?
Did you already see a doctor?

Which part of being in debt is overwhelming? The amount or the shame that it may bring?
Who are your lenders? Are they professional lenders or with strings attached lenders? What are your debt types?
Did you already speak with a financial expert or a debt consultant?

Are you open to both mental health and debt counseling?

Not only consumers or individuals can be in debt and depressed -- companies too, and whole countries.

So what are you saying? That it's actually normal to be in debt and depressed?

I think debt and depression come naturally with each other. As one is unable to handle their finances well, an emotional effect is likely to happen. In fact the trauma of losing a job, a loved one, or any source of income really  gives one enough reason to feel depressed.

But can paying off debts help alleviate depression? What are practical ways to get this taken care of?

Not really...but in a way yes. Being in debt and being depressed ---and also getting well eventually are all  parts of the life cycle in a civilized/capitalist existence. Although not everybody undergoes that cycle.

The key for the sick to get well is to seek professional help.

If the consumer has mostly credit card debts and it amounts to more than $10,000 (past due accounts) he/she can qualify for a debt settlement program, where the total debt amount can be reduced to more or less half of the original, and the consumer's monthly payments are reduced as well.

And speaking of professional help, destroydebt.com is open to consumers who are seeking a sound debt advice or a reliable debt relief program, just fill out a form and consult with a debt expert for free.

Think about Cosmos is right. Also it takes a personal decision to be able to look beyond present circumstances and do something about your situation. Decision determines your destination, and making the right set of decisions can help you in your walk to get out of debt and depression.

The best of luck to you!
