Excesses...neglect...

And back to my original point, it's cultural and systemic. America would really be better off without that virtual money industry. The term full disclosure even though already addressed by President Obama just does not work with the credit business.

I'd believe that that debt free and prosperous living dream would have a chance at coming true if and only if---our society reverts back to open transactions. Cash.
We only spend what we need, and we only owe to those who we know personally.

I believe credit has its uses and advantages and is not necessarily an evil thing. It can be good especially if the purchased item or service (such as a house, a student loan, or an auto loan) appreciates in value. Besides, if lenders see that an individual has established a credit history--a good one at that--, it adds a certain sense of confidence in that the consumer can be trusted to be paying their bills on time. The credit risk lessens and a business relationship is established.

I think John Commuta's approach to eradicating debt is rubbish. He promises in his Debt to Wealth course that consumers can be debt free in five to seven years. The truth is, consolidating your debt can take much less--going thru credit counseling will just take five years, and settling the debt can take as little as a year's time, for crying out loud.

What other alternatives would you then suggest to consumers instead of availing of this book Debt Free and Prosperous Living?

You may either settle your debt, go thru credit counseling, obtain a consolidation loan, or file for Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Each works best depending on a certain situation.
