I believe the question was addressed earlier--that accreditation is key and they need to be affiliated with the regulatory agencies available.

Are credit counseling services any good? I think if you have bad credit they can help you out lots... Especially if the amount that you owe is much lower, than $5,000 I believe... Am I right? Help me out here...

Allow me to rephrase historymaker's question:
Are credit counseling services any good if I have had bad credit?Yes, a credit counseling service may be of help to you especially if your credit has not been very good. Once you avail of their services, certified counselors will help you create a workable long-term budget plan specifically designed for your financial situation. From thereon, you can be able to allot your resources accordingly.

Doesn't this information also appear on your credit report? I'm curious if it makes any difference on the consumer's credit score, though.
Whenever you enroll your accounts on a credit counseling service, your creditor will report that information to the credit bureaus.

Are credit counseling services any good if I have had bad credit?Yes, because they will help you make your payments to your creditors. Being enrolled in a debt management plan will also be indicated on your credit report as "Enrolled in a DMP" or something similar to that, but it won't do any lasting effects on your credit score. It will also be removed from your report as soon as the payment period is finished.

how long does a debt management plan last?

A debt management plan lasts for five years at most. Also you're given the opportunity to pay off your loan with a lower interest rate and--possibly--no fees and other charges. It all depends on what transpires on negotiations between your creditor and your credit counselor.
