It depends on the company. It usually ranges from 40-60% of your balance tho.

Debt settlement companies typically charge at least 15-25% of the actual debt amount, and repayment is spread out depending on the company's policy. Rest assured, they never charge one lump sum.

You may do it yourself, and yes, it is free--however it may be much more challenging (or difficult), given that the creditors are after the funds that you owe them, and they may want to get more than you can offer. If you opt for this choice, you need to be assertive and stand on your ground.

Anger Manager: I don't know if there are any debt-settlement companies that are non-profit. As far as I know only credit counseling companies function as non-profit, for public service reasons.

Wasn;t there word of a "government bailout" specifically designed to help all those, including myself, to get out of debt? What's the scoop on that?

The government bail-out was just a rumor. Personally I don't think that the government is obliged to bail their citizens out of debt.

There's more information on that here:

Can you pay off debt with a government grant...

Is unemployment benefits, such as that regular check that an unemployed consumer can collect, qualify as a government grant? If it can be considered a government grant...then yes, that can be used to pay off debt.

You can't pay off debt with a government grant. The fact of the matter is, no one can. Most of the responses here are pretty much in the wrong.

Most government grants have specific uses and are given to organizations and institutions with the purpose of providing benefit for a larger community. The Grants.gov website specifically mentions that they do not offer personal financial assistance to consumers. Government grants are hardly available to individuals and are not at all used for debt management or consolidation purposes.

So, to answer the question = "Can I use my government grant to pay off debt?" The answer is NO.
