bryfish-

Credit counseling is typically effective for people who have a low debt amount (under $10 K), high interest rates but no problem making their monthly payments at all.

Are you familiar with how these companies work? If not let me know and I can give you an overview.

What is your situation? Is it similar to what I mentioned above or not?

Is credit counseling right for me?

What is your goal? Debt management and debt reduction or is it debt elimination?

If your debt amount is over $10,000 and your accounts mostly past due, maybe debt settlement is better for you.

If you are being served a lawsuit, facing eviction, foreclosure -- credit counseling won't save you. Perhaps you should file bankruptcy to avail of its automatic stay provision.

If you're also asking, "Is credit counseling right for me?" The answer to this would be a yes if you aren't able to create a feasible and workable budget and stick to it. It may also apply if you cannot keep up with your bills, and are unable to agree on a payment plan with your creditors.
