If one is to apply for a debt settlement program, what are the qualifications? Why would anybody choose debt settlement over the other programs? Are many people applying for debt settlement? Is it safe?

Hi debtdefying, I do not have the figures as to how many consumers have applied for debt settlement programs this year, but judging from the credit card companies response--did you see that thread about debt forgiveness 2009? -- it's a success.Credit card companies, in the previous years, upon learning that the consumer sought the help of a debt settlement company, used to refuse to negotiate with the settlement representatives. They preferred to deal with the consumers themselves, but now it seems like they have a change of heart.

Most debt settlement companies will qualify an individual if he or she owes more than $10,000 in unsecured debt. This would include credit cards, personal loans and medical bills. If you are looking to get help with secured debt only you will not qualify for debt settlement. And finally, make sure the settlement company you are speaking with operates in your state. Another important thing to keep in mind is that an unsecured account must be past due in order to settle. If you remain current on your monthly payments while working with a debt settlement company it won't do you any good, as the creditors will not negotiate settlements. The best way to choose a "safe" settlement company is to do your homework. You can start by checking the company profile through the Better Business Bureau (bbb.org), and The Association of Settlement Companies (tascsite.org). Certainly a company who is members and in good standing with both is preferred over a company who is not.

Yes, debt settlement applications are free. Usually, these "applications" are really forms that you can fill out on the company's website, at which point a consultant will follow up with you to see if you qualify for their program.

Is there a difference between credit card debt settlement applications and debt settlement applications?

Is there a difference between credit card debt settlement applications and debt settlement applications?Nope. Perhaps the reason why some people add "credit card" to debt settlement is because what most debt settlement companies deal with or settle/negotiate with are credit card debts (unsecured.)

Are debt settlement applications available in all states?

Are debt settlement applications available in all states? Unfortunately, no.There are states that prohibit or restrict professional debt settlement services. That means that even if the consumer qualifies in the debt settlement program, because of the state law, it would not be possible to be enrolled in it . The consumer would have to resort to the Do-It-Yourself debt settlement option if he/she lives in the following states:GiorgiaIdahoKansasMaineMississippiMinnesotaNorth and South CarolinaUtah Wisconsin

Are debt settlement applications available in all states?  Actually yes. Debt settlement applications are available anywhere...what Revived Paths meant when he said no, was the service. Aside from the Do It Yourself way, the consumer can also hire the services of a law firm that also does debt settlement.
