It would be embarrassing to be called to the reception area regarding this. Can a debt collector come to my work place?

I don't think so justbreathe, because that would be a violation of your privacy. Unless you authorize or consent to it...and also that would be a violation of your FDCPA rights. The debt collector cannot disclose your debt to anybody else including the other agencies and they cannot leave messages to any third party asking the third party to have you contact them. They may contact your spouse, parent/s, friend/s asking for your contact number but only once.

Remember that the collector knows your name and your contact number and could have contacted you directly so it is very suspicious if he/she contacts other people with regards to your debt--or come directly to your work place. If ever the collector contacts your family members or your neighbor, he/she should:-not disclose or discuss your debts with them-identify himself/herself by name, and if asked, the name of the company

Actually, the FDCPA does state that a debt collector may contact you in person, unless you have informed them that this is inconvenient for you. So, it is possible (and legal) for a debt collector to come to your workplace (hypothetically speaking) unless you have instructed them not to do so. While the FDCPA does state that debt collectors are supposed to honor verbal requests in instances such as these, don't count on them doing so. Send the collection agency something in writing instructing them not to contact you over the phone or in person at your workplace. Now, in general, this would be a very rare occurance. Think about it. The collection agency would have to be located fairly close to you in order for a collector to even tamper with the idea of trying to reach you in person while you are working. Its not like a debt collector is going to purchase an airline ticket to try and track you down in person when they can simply reach you by telephone or regular mail.
