Hi Diane- Unfortunately the FDCPA doe not provide an actual number as to how many times a debt collector may contact you within a 24 hour period. However, the FTC's interpretation of the FDCPA asserts that a collector may only call you for primary reasons such as making first contact, informing you of how much you owe and asking what your plans are to repay the debt. Or, to return a phone call that you made to the collector. If the debt collector is calling you over and over for no particular reason other than to annoy you, this constitutes harassment and is a violation of the FDCPA. Finally, debt collectors may not contact you before 8 AM or after 9 PM local time.

If they are harassing you, I suggest sending them a cease and desist letter to inform them that you would like the calls to cease. If you simply tell them over the phone to stop calling you shouldn't count on that happening.

I have no idea how they found my number. I'm not even listed but they were able to track me down AND contact my grandmother in another state! What gives?? Can they actually do that?!

Ashley, debt collectors can use a method called "skiptracing" in order to trace your whereabouts. They may use your credit report to obtain information on you, in order to collect on the loan that you have. And yes, they are allowed to contact your relatives, employers, and other third parties who are affiliated with you, but only to gather location information on you. They are not allowed by federal law to disclose the purposes of their call.

It is frustrating to find out legally how often collectors can call I understand. Below is a link to a sample cease and desist letter, you may want to take a look at it before drafting your own and sending it off to your creditors. http://www.payingpaul.com/cease-desist-letter.php
