Crazehorse- debt negotiation is a very effective method of debt resolution for some individuals who are facing a specific set of circumstances. For instance, are you aware of the fact that in order to negotiate and settle a credit card, medical bill or personal loan debt the account must be past due? So, the first question I have for you is are you delinquent on your unsecured debts? Also, debt settlement is typically geared towards individuals with high amounts of unsecured debt. For instance, a person who is current on their monthly payments and only owes $2 thousand dollars would not be a good candidate. So, I would say the first thing you would want to do is assess your own situation and determine whether or not debt negotiation is a suitable option for someone in your situation. Feel free to share more information about your debt issues and I will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Oh yeah they are delinquent all right, I haven't paid anything for almost a year now. Problem is I don't even know who is calling me at this point but I gotta assume they are in collections right? What would my first step be?

Ok, first you will need to locate your accounts. The best thing to do is go to annualcreditreport.com and pull a credit report for free (they allow you to do this once per year). I recommend Experian. If any of your accounts are with collections that information should be listed. Worst case scenario usually means that you have to contact the original creditors to find out where the accounts have been placed for collection. Then, you can determine what your best options may be for settling your debts. The question after that should most likely be- are you going to try and negotiate on your own or will you hire a debt settlement company to work on your behalf?

I am not really comfortable negotiating on my own as I have had no experience in this field. Any suggestions on how to find a good company?

Also, I am very familiar with credit counseling as I went through a debt management plan back in the early 90's. You don't think that would have any effect on me in terms of qualifying for a debt settlement program do you?

You would have no problem being approved for a debt settlement program even though you went through credit counseling awhile back. Also, people who have settled debts in the past can also still qualify for credit counseling.
