From what I understand they need a court order to enter your home. In terms of just showing up at your door, I believe some collectors can do that depending on what type of debt it is.

The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) states that a debt collector may contact you in person, by telephone, telegram or regular mail. However, they cannot contact you at inconvenient locations if you have previously instructed them not to do so, nor can they attempt to contact you before 8 AM or after 9 PM unless you have given them permission to do so. With that being said, the chances of a debt collector showing up at your house are very rare, particularly for credit card debt. Common sense would tell me that the collection agency would have to be located very close to your residence for a debt collector to come close to even considering taking this sort of action.

Can a debt collector actually come to your house? -- they can but something should tell you that it's an act of desperation and not of professionalism. Your number one concern should someone claiming to be a debt collector come to your house is identification. Find out who they are, what they want, and ask for proof. Contact details, information about your debt ... and never admit to anything. The key term is "debt validation" - they should give you that before anything else.

can a debt collector actually come to your house? -- a legitimate debt collector (with whom the creditor has assigned your account to) would first call. And within 5 days of that first contact, would send you a letter containing the exact amount that you owe, your creditor's info, and what you can do should you want to have that debt validated.

can a debt collector actually come to your house?- without first notifying you? it's possible but it all depends on what they're going to say to you. coming to your house once is not a violation, i think. at least not yet, and there are things that they can't say to you. like threaten you or pretend that they're attorneys.

This morning a debt collector came to my house and told my elderly mother that I care for that is was imperative that I call today. Imperative? This is ridiculous!
