Hi, I have recently lost my job and am in tons of debts, I feel panicky and I know that that's irrational of me...I just can't help it, there's just this feeling that they are going to catch up on me soon. I'm a single mom and I have 2 kids in grade school...

I'm sorry to hear about your recent unemployment, I suppose it's become a trend, and I hope that you find another job soon. In the meantime, if your debts are mostly from credit card companies, try to contact them and negotiate the interest on your cards. See if you can have them lower it or freeze it. The idea is for you to be able to negotiate interest-only payments.

Unwritten, do you have any assets that you can sell? That can help in at least giving you some more resources to get on by, and hopefully use some to pay the debts off.You may also try to file for Unemployment Benefits. I may be wrong but I think previously employed individuals such as yourself can file for these benefits after a certain period of time.

Don't give up negotiation if the creditor refuses the interest only payments pitch, ask the creditor next if it is possible for your debt and credit card payments to be reduced or be spread over a longer term.

Are you paying for your house too? You can also ask your mortgage lender for a forbearance agreement so you can pay just a fraction of your monthly mortgage payment, until you find employment again. You'd find that most mortgage lenders are more than willing to negotiate payments to avoid foreclosure.

Wow, I am feeling a little better now even if I haven't done anything yet. Thank you all for your contributions, and no purple cow, I do not have assets to sell, and I'm actually relying on child support for the everyday expenses. You said unemployment benefits, from the government you mean?

Yes it is from the government so the first thing that you can do is go the nearest One-Stop Employment Centers or Unemployment Insurance Claims Office to file a claim for unemployment benefits. You can find them in the phone book or on line. When you file for unemployment benefits don't forget the following, you'll need them: correct name and address of all your employers for the past 18 months, exact dates, and any written reason as to why you are not with the company anymore. In addition, with regards to your house bills, contact your utility companies to try to to work out a budget program and when they agree, do not ever miss payments.

You may also want to get debt counseling by contacting the Consumer Credit Counseling Service (CCS) in your area, or you can fill out forms in destroydebt.com for a free consultation. Speaking with either group and enrolling in their programs may help you come up with or revise a household budget, negotiate your payment to be lowered, avoid foreclosure, and maybe even prevent bankruptcy too.

Okay...I'm listing them all down. Would anybody know how I can claim the unemployment benefits? Thank you again!

You'd have to apply for it, there would be forms to be filled out, have your employment information handy, especially if you are applying over the phone or online. Make sure you follow the instructions and answer honestly. If you have fields or questions that you do not understand, never make up any answer, please ask for assistance. Then proceed to filing your claim, depending on the waiting period in your state, you can expect your unemployment benefits to be deposited to your bank account. Also don't forget to inform the office that's paying your unemployment benefits if you've found a job (part-time or full time) and finally keep all the records and transactions of this claim.
