is there any way that debt collectors can stop calling my cell phone? i understand that there's debt that needs to be paid and all that, but they sometimes call at very inappropriate hours (usually 9 in the morning, when i'm getting ready for work, or when i'm in a meeting in the office). i've told them to stop calling me but they still continue to do so. the more that they try to call me, the less i am motivated to take care of this debt. please advise on what to do.

Lavender81686~Debt collectors may contact you on your cell phone, since you have listed that number on your credit application with the original creditor. According to the Federal Communications Commission, as long as you have provided the information when you first signed up for credit, you are giving your consent to receive automated calls from the debt collectors. These companies are also authorized to contact you between 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. at your time zone. So far, they have not been violating FDCPA measures. If they've been calling you at what you deem are "very inappropriate hours," you may write them a Cease and Desist letter to stop the calls, explaining that you no longer wish to be contacted via telephone.
A verbal request will not suffice. That would just prompt the collections agency to contact you again.

Here's a sample letter I found that you can use. http://www.privacyrights.org/Letters/debt2.htm

In 2006 a petition was issued against debt collection companies who have been calling debtors on their cell phones, and you can learn more about it here: http://www.privacyrights.org/ar/FCC-DebtCell.htmAfter two years the petition was disregarded and debt collectors were authorized to call individuals with delinquent loans on their cell phones. The petition made a lot of noise apparently, but the FCC thought otherwise.
