Birdman- How long bankruptcy stays on your credit report for is determined by what Chapter bankruptcy you filed. If you filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy, that will remain on your credit report for 10 years from the date the bankruptcy petition was filed. If you filed Chapter 13 bankruptcy, that will remain on your credit report for 7 years from the date the bankruptcy petition was filed. Other than that there is no way to get the bankruptcy removed from your credit report at an earlier date, unless of course you can prove to the credit bureaus that the bankruptcy that appears on your credit report was not in fact yours.

I agree with Steven, only the passage of time will guarantee the removal of the bankruptcy notation. And just to you know, a bankruptcy will also stay on your public records for 20 years.

Hi Ned, A settlement stays on your credit report 7 years from the date that the account was settled. It will appear on your credit report that you are in a debt management program for your entire tenure if you choose to work with a credit counseling company. These programs typically last 5 years, afterwhich, if your debts are resolved it will no longer show that you are still receiving debt management services.

Can bankruptcy be removed from your credit - I think the previous posts have answered this, so for those who are considering filing one, do think twice. You have other options. File bankruptcy only when you need the automatic stay provision or you're a senior citizen.

Can bankruptcy be removed from your credit - only after it's served its time. And I think a good follow up question to this is - how can you repair your credit after bankruptcy (?)
